The Holy Grail of Information Management
or the myth of one version of the truth?
“How many times have you been asked to deliver "one version of the truth"? Why is that single truth so elusive for business?”
For years organisations have tried to create a single version of the truth; a single set of business terms, definitions and reports to provide them with a timely, accurate and above all common view of their business.
Maybe the fact that an entire industry has been built on providing the tools and techniques to extract, transform, load and exploit information should be answer enough. Or could it be that in the kingdom of truth context is the one true king?
By adding context to information we provided insight and looking at a business as a value chain links that context to business value. When the individual parts of a business can see their information in context they can see how to maximise their value to the business; and that is true performance management!
The white paper The Myth of One Version of the Truth, based on the book "Performance Leadership" by Frank Buytendijk, illustrates how adding context to information adds value to a business and this is shown with real-world examples across a railway company, a mobile telephone provider, a retail bank and a software vendor.
